What began as a small meeting in The Station Pub in Kings Heath, led by Walter McGee, Micheál Sugrue and Paddy Fogarty, has grown into one of the most established GAA clubs in Warwickshire and across the West Midlands.
In those early years, St Brendan’s quickly became more than just a Gaelic football club. It was a place where people connected, built friendships and kept a strong link to home and their families. Playing in our now familiar green and red colours (long story and the source of many arguments between Kerry and Mayo men!), the club started at junior level and made an immediate impact, winning the Warwickshire Junior Championship in 1962 and moving up to senior football soon after.
Over the following decades, St Brendan’s GAA Birmingham developed into a major force in Warwickshire GAA. A first Senior Championship title in 1977 marked a turning point, followed by a hugely successful period in the 1980s and 1990s, when the club won multiple county titles and competed strongly across Britain.
But success at St Brendan’s has never just been about trophies. The club has always been built on community spirit, driven by volunteers, families and players who gave their time to ensure Gaelic games continued to thrive in Birmingham.
A strong focus on underage development has been central to the club’s long-term success. Generations of young players have come through the ranks, helping sustain the club through more challenging periods and driving its resurgence in recent years.
That commitment paid off with a return to senior football in 2016, alongside continued success at underage level, including All Britain titles. Today, St Brendan’s continues to grow, with a thriving youth section and a renewed energy across all teams.
Today, St Brendan’s is proud to be one of the leading GAA clubs in Birmingham, Warwickshire and Britain, welcoming players of all ages and abilities. While our history is full of great moments on the pitch, what truly defines us is the sense of belonging, friendships made, families involved, and a shared passion for Gaelic games.
